Tips for covering Dormer Windows

Dormer windows are windows that basically stick out from the area of the roof. They are generally slanted which may create a problem finding window coverings. The fact that you are trying to fit window coverings to a slanted, recessed window may pose a problem in itself. However, if you get creative, there are actually many solutions to this problem. For example, you may consider attaching the window treatment on the outside wall, and then also hanging a shade or wood blind on the inside to add privacy and protection from the sun. You will have more versatility in choosing the proper colors and fabrics if you hang a window covering on the inside of your home, in addition to the outside covering. The outside window covering could be more functional, but also look nice, as well. Having the two window coverings, both inside and outside, will not only add privacy, but also control the light in your room for added comfort to you and prevent your furniture from fading from the sunlight. This would also be more energy efficient, thus provide more comfort to you, as well as savings on your utility bills.

With a recessed window, such as one of this type, you may want to consider a fabric for the inside that blends with your wall and furnishings. You could choose a neutral color shade that will offset your furnishings, or a matching shade to coordinate with your furnishings. This type of window setting will enable you to create an elegant background for your room. The neutral color shade will contribute to a light and airy feel for the room. This would also generate a sunny feel without having direct sunlight stream into the room on a hot summer day. A soft fabric in a neutral color will also look nice with dark jewel tone furnishings and/oraccessories, thereby creating a stylish look.

You need to carefully consider the fabric you choose for the window treatment and keep in mind that you will need something with ample light protection. With a recessed window, the light is actually channeled into the room. This effect is exacerbated during a bright sunny day, and it may look as though a spotlight is shining into your room. If the room is too bright, it could cause your furniture to fade over time.

You may even want to become more innovative and construct a window seat for the area. Because dormer windows are somewhat slanted, the seat may need to be farther back from the window, which may require a little remodeling of that area. A window seat is very appealing and can be very functional as well. You may use your design skills to create beautiful accessories, such as pillows and cushions for the window seat, and thereby create an attractive addition to your room.
