Are Faux Wood Blinds for
you?
Faux wood blinds are a more practical
solution for many homes today. They are a nice alternative to real wood
blinds since they are more affordable and easier to maintain, especially
since they are resistant to moisture. Therefore, they would be favorable for
bathroom windows and other areas where moisture may be a problem, unlike
real wood blinds, which can warp due to moisture.
Other names for faux wood blinds include alternative woods, wood-like,
poly-wood, and other names. They may be made of vinyl or vinyl compounds, as
well as a combination of wood and vinyl. They can be found in many different
brands including Levolor, Graber and Comfortex, to name a few.
If you prefer the richness of real wood blinds, you might not want to use
the faux wood. These blinds cannot be stained and there are not as many
color selections as there are with real wood blinds. The blinds are not as
heavy as wood and there are some size constraints as well; plus they may
yellow over time. However, you can still obtain quality faux wood blinds
that will provide you with an attractive window covering.
Be on the look out for cheap foam type blinds that resemble wood. These
blinds are poor quality and they can sag and need more support strings since
they are quite heavy.
All of the faux wood blinds do need more ladders than wood blinds. If you
purchase good quality wood blinds, however, they will be much sturdier and
the ladders can be placed farther apart. Fewer ladders means that your
blinds will have a more attractive sleeker look. Also, less light will
filter through when the blinds are closed since there will be fewer and
smaller holes.
Even though there are some disadvantages with wood blinds, it does not mean
that you cannot purchase good quality, nice appearing blinds. With the newer
technologies available today, faux wood blinds have a lighter and sturdier
slat than ever before, and, of course these faux blinds are less expensive
than the wood blinds. The wood/vinyl alloy blinds are best because they are
studier and require fewer ladders. They are also available in more colors
too.
