Using Window Treatment
Hardware
Window treatment hardware has become
very significant in recent years because it is seen as important to the
decorating aspect of window treatments. Drapery hardware devices are no
longer just functional, but decorative and stylish as well. In fact a touch
of artistry and uniqueness can be achieved in your window treatments by
adding just the right hardware. Decorative hardware can actually become the
focal point of your room.
You first need to decide on the function of the rod; that is whether you
need something that closes for privacy or a decorative item. Then determine
the size and scale of your windows and window treatments. Large rooms can
accommodate bigger rods; whereas, smaller rooms will look better with
smaller, delicate rods. Next establish the finish that looks best. Your rods
should either “disappear” when matched to the color of the walls; or you can
create a contrast by using finials (the decorative pieces that attach to the
rods) that “make a statement.”
Rods and finials are available in many different types of materials,
including wood, metal, glass, iron and ceramic. In fact, there are so many
different decorative rods, that it may be quite a task to select the right
one for your window treatment.
Different designs are seen on today’s popular hardware finials and rods.
These include everything from arrows, scrolls and spiral balls to flowered
designs such as fleur de lis and roses. Other popular finial shapes include
leafs, scrolls, shells and fruits, including the symbol of hospitality:
pineapples. In addition, different textures and finishes can be combined to
enhance these designs. You might notice a dark colored rod with a spiral
ball design that contains an antique gold finish. Multi-colored glass
finials may impart a decorative art glass appearance that was popular nearly
two centuries ago.
