Using Layering
Effects with Window Coverings and Treatments
Layered window treatments are a popular trend. This
technique is not only beautiful, but will provide versatility too. As an
example, you can install mini-blinds next to the glass, which will control
the light; then add fabric panels which will provide color and style. The
idea is to complement the style of the window with fabric folds, tucks,
pleats or other types of layering techniques.
There are so many different ways to create beautiful layering effects. You
are able to fashion sophisticated, stylish and unique appearances with your
window treatments. You can begin with mini blinds, wood blinds, cellular
blinds, roller shades or pleated blinds then cover them with elegant sheers
or fabric drapes.
Appearances of diffused light can be produced by adding sheer weave fabric
blinds that will decrease the fading of your draperies which is caused by UV
rays. With sheer weave blinds, you can also reduce the heat and glare of the
sun. This type of window treatment is ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.
You should consider interior screen frames, rather than mini blinds or
roller shades for your layered windowed treatments upstairs. These interior
screen frames greatly reduce the harmful effects of the sun’s afternoon rays
that are magnified on upstairs windows. The interior screens are composed of
coated fiberglass yarns that are designed to filter out heat and, thereby,
protect your furnishings from the harmful UV rays, as well as reduce the
effects of the heat. Layered combinations using these interior screen frames
not only have practical characteristics, but will provide an elegant
appearance as well.
If you want a room darkening effect, use fabrics that will prevent light
from penetrating into your room. Room darkening roller shades are ideal as
they are inexpensive and available in many different colors. You can add
layers to intensify the darkening effects as well as the appearance of the
window treatments.
Other layering effects are created with translucent sheers along with light
or heavy fabrics as well as a window blind or interior window screen. For a
graceful appearance, you may use voile sheers, which will also allow the
light to filter into your room. A nice contrast against your sheers can be
created with linen, whereas a textured wool will create a contemporary
appearance.
Sheers and draperies should be hung from individual tracks, whereas mini
blinds, cellular blinds and pleated blinds or roller shades should be sized
to fit inside the window frame.
With just the right layering fabrics, techniques and window treatments, you
can create a look that is beautiful as well as functional for many rooms in
your home.
