Tips on Purchasing
Window Blinds
When it comes to selecting window blinds, whether they
be the traditional horizontal or vertical blinds, there are many different
options from which to choose. Some of these blinds are manufactured by
well-known companies; others may be designed and manufactured by newer
companies. Some of the more well-known brands include Levelor, Comfortex,
Bali, Hunter Douglas, Prestige, Graber, Kirsch and others.
When it comes to purchasing horizontal blinds, it is important to consider
the slats on the blinds; the thicker the better as they will be more
durable. A .007 or .009 normal gauge thickness will certainly be superior to
a .006 gauge thickness. The thicker slats will last longer and be much less
susceptible to damage.
For vertical blinds, it is important to choose durable steel headrails. They
are stronger that the light weight aluminum headrails that are often sold
today. Purchase vertical blinds with self-aligning carriers so that the
gears will not be easily stripped. The thickness of the vertical blinds is
important as well. They will not only be more durable, but more functional
as well because they are able to block out more sunlight. The thicker blinds
also have a nicer appearance. You may save a few dollars initially by buying
cheaper, less durable blinds, but it will cost you more in the long run
since the blinds will not last long.
Both horizontal and vertical blinds will give you adequate light control and
privacy; merely adjust the blinds to suit your lighting needs. You want to
make sure you have the proper blinds for your room to avoid annoying light
filtering into your room when you are trying to sleep. It is also better for
your furniture and accessories to keep bright light from filtering into your
room.
Blinds are available in different woods, metals, and fabrics. Find the type
that complements the décor of your room. This should not be a problem since
there are so many colors and styles of blinds from which to choose. You can
also dress up your blinds or leave them plain, depending on the type of room
for which they will be used. For a dressy effect, you can soften the blinds
with a valance or other type of fabric treatment such as a window scarf,
swags or even drapes. The combination of window blinds and fabrics will
provide you with light control as well as beauty and style.
