Types of window coverings
There are so many types of window coverings from which to
choose; you may start looking at your options and become overwhelmed. For
example, if you are looking for window coverings to match or coordinate your
decor, you may want to choose custom made Roman shades. These shade will enable
you to match your window treatments with the decor of your particular room. Or
you may prefer to go with some type of durable shade made from wood or vinyl.
The type of window coverings you choose may vary from room to room and may
depend on your family (i.e., whether you have small children or grown children
or an empty nest, etc.).
There is a wide variety of colors, shapes and styles of window blinds and window
shades. Following is a brief description of both window blinds and window
shades.
Window blinds consist of both horizontal and vertical blinds. The horizontal
blinds can be raised and lowered and can be opened if left down. The blinds are
usually made from aluminum or hardwoods or a combination of hardwoods and other
materials. The aluminum blinds are generally inexpensive and you may find that
these blinds (in neutral colors) are often used in rentals as they are generally
more durable than drapes or other window coverings and less costly to replace.
Horizontal blinds are generally used on windows that
are taller than they are wide.
Vertical blinds slide from side to side. By sliding them part-way or not at all,
the blinds can be partially or fully opened. They are generally made from vinyl,
fabric and aluminum. They are used on windows that are wider than they are tall
and are often used on sliding glass doors.
Both vertical and horizontal blinds are offered in numerous colors, materials,
textures and styles. They are offset by contoured head rails above the blinds,
making for a more stylish appearance. There will most likely be a color and
fabric suited to your decor.
Another type of window covering that seems to have made a "comeback" in recent
years are the shutters. They are available in so many styles and colors, as well
as hardwood material and a poly-satin mix. The hardwood type may create a
classic design which would offset or coordinate well with the decor of your
home. Shutters are also ideal for windows which are vulnerable to extreme heat
and humidity and other in climate weather conditions.
