About Window Blinds
Window blinds are coverings for windows which are
normally attached to the interior side of the window. The term window
“blinds” refers to “blinding” the viewer from the blinding rays of the sun.
There are four primary types of blinds: slat blinds, Venetian blinds,
miniblinds, and vertical blinds. Solid blinds also exist, but these are
mainly considered window shades. The blinds may be composed of aluminum,
wood, faux wood, or vinyl.
Slat blinds contain numerous vertical, flat slats made of metal or vinyl.
These slats are connected with string that enable them to be rotated so that
light may penetrate through the window and into the room; or the entire
blinds may be raised so that more light can enter the room. The blinds are
pulled up (or down) manually using a pull cord; or a motorized system may be
utilized with just the touch of a button.
Venetian blinds are basic blinds which are slatted and composed of metal or
plastic. Wood may also be used, but when it is, the blinds are usually
referred to as wooden blinds or bamboo blinds. Venetian blinds have been in
use for centuries, in fact, it is believed that they were invented in
Venice, Italy (thus, the name) sometime in the mid 1700’s.
Miniblinds are Venetian blinds with very narrow slats.
Vertical blinds are slats made of metal, vinyl or stiffened fabric that hang
vertically rather than the more traditional horizontal blinds. They hang
from the track almost to the floor.
Window blinds can be used on windows in virtually any room in your home.
They will prevent glare from penetrating your room, which is especially
important in a room in which TV is viewed or a computer is used. Window
blinds also provide privacy when they are closed, yet provide adequate light
when they are opened.
Window blinds are available in a myriad of styles and types from wood to
vinyl to fabrics. Wood blinds, vertical blinds and honeycomb blinds will
provide you with a formal look, while the more traditional metal miniblinds
or Venetian blinds will provide a more practical appearance and may also be
more affordable.
